Abbott pledges ‘stronger’ Syria role amid poor poll

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has given the strongest indication to date that Australia will join in air strikes against Islamic State over Syria.

Ahead of Cabinet considering a United States request to join air strikes, Mr Abbott said on Monday Australia's response to the crisis in Syria was strong and "will become stronger in coming days".

The national security committee of Cabinet will meet this morning before the full Cabinet meeting, where a decision was expected to be made.

Mr Abbott said in Question Time on Monday Australia would "always do what we can to help".

"This government has already provided a very strong security response to the problems in the Middle East, and that response will become stronger in coming days," he said.

Monday was the second anniversary of the Coalition parties winning office.

Despite sealing three trade deals, the government's two budgets and related ongoing controversies have dogged the Coalition's support.

The latest Newspoll, published in The Australian on Monday showed support for the government fell on every measure since it was elected.

It showed the Coalition's primary vote was down 6.6 points since the last election and voter satisfaction with Mr Abbott as Prime Minister fell 17 points in that time.

The poll also showed Labor leads the Coalition on the all-important two-party preferred measure 54% to the Coalition's 46%, based on preferences from the 2013 poll.

Primary support for both parties was 39%; with Labor's result steady and the Coalition's falling from 40% a fortnight ago.

Despite the poll, Mr Abbott believes voters will reward his government for "sticking with the plan".
