ABS warns of fake census collectors

THE Australian Bureau of Statistics is warning Gold Coast residents to beware of bogus Census collectors knocking on resident's doors.

“A number of imposters have been targeting the Gold Coast area, impersonating official ABS Collectors,” Queensland Census director Sally Pritchard said.

She said legitimate Census collectors should be displaying photo identification and sporting bright yellow satchels.

“Householders should request to see a Census collector’s photo identification. If they are not able to provide it, they are not employed by the ABS,” Ms Pritchard said.

Census collectors never telephone or email households to ask questions about personal information.

The ABS encourages Australians to contact police if they feel they have been targeted by a Census imposter.

ABS-employed collectors began delivering Census forms to Australian households on July 29.
