ADF on guard in Greece

A FORMER Pottsville resident was part of an Australian Defence Force delegation to Greece to help commemorate a famous battle.

Able Seaman Theresa Whyte was in Greece as part of a contingent of Australia’s Federation Guard commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Greece and Crete.

Before enlisting in the army, Theresa attended Kingscliff High School and was a lifesaver and keen surfer.

“I joined the army because it was something that had always interested me and I wanted a challenge,” Ms Whyte said.

“The guard offered the opportunity for travel, good physical training, and I like the drill and ceremonial aspects of the military that they perform.”

She said the trip to Greece has been the highlight of her career.

“This trip was fantastic – meeting the veterans and learning about all the history in Greece has been great,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to telling people about the trip – also I would like to go back to Greece again on holiday because it’s such a beautiful country.”

More than 600 Australians lost their lives in the Battle for Greece and Crete, while close to 5000 were prisoners of war.
