Setting sights on lofty career
SAM Free Daly is flying high.
The 14-year-old Murwillumbah High School aerialist has embraced the newest up-in-the air performance craze.
Aerial incorporates an apparatus often attached to the ceiling, allowing performers to move while suspended in the air.
Surprisingly enough Sam admits that despite her love of the sport she is not a fan of heights.
“I am afraid of heights but I don't get scared while performing because I feel secure and I trust the rigger,” she said.
“I have been doing this for eight years and I really enjoy it. It's fun and it keeps you fit.
“I used to train at Spaghetti Circus and I now train with the Gold Coast Aerial Angels.”
Sam said she has big dreams of where her love of aerial will take her.
“When you turn 18 you can become a professional; I would love to travel the world doing it,” she said.
“My next performance will be at the Mt Warning Preschool Fete and I will perform with Aerial Angels at the Gold Coast Entertainment Centre in August.
“I perform with the silks, lyra (hoop), trapeze and I do acrobatics.
“You have to be naturally flexible and it is a lot of work.
Sam walks a tightrope with her many commitments, balancing her aerial and school work.
“I do two-and-a-half hours of aerial dancing work a week and one hour of ballet training with Aerial Angels,” Sam said.
“I also do gymnastics and assist Michelle Thomas with teaching at Murwillumbah primary school.”
Sam is happy to put in the hard work before she runs off to join the circus.
