UPDATED, 8.00pm:  The pilot of a yellow fire bombing plane, which was believed to have crashed into the ocean off Tweed tonight, has been found safe and well.

Early reports suggest the pilot did not crash in the water but into bush land elsewhere.

The search by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter and PolAir was called off.

UPDATED, 7.40pm:  Reports of a plane that crashed into the ocean off Tweed appear to be false.

While authorities had spent the evening searching for signs of debris, it seems the plane in question had been practicing fire bombing.

Initial reports suggest the pilot may have struck the water but was able to pull out.

Authorities first became involved when members of the public thought they saw an aircraft crash into the sea off Wooyung Beach. More information as it becomes available.

INITIAL REPORT, 7.22pm:  AUTHORITIES are searching for a light plane that it's believed has crashed into the ocean off Kingscliff.

Crews were in the air at 7pm searching following witness reports of the as yet unconfirmed crash off Wooyung Beach.

Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter communication officer Therese Schier confirmed the chopper was helping search for the plane.

"Members of the public saw something go into the sea," she said.

"They're searching for debris now."

Ms Schier said a police helicopter, PolAir, was also searching for any sign of a crash.

A Point Danger Marine Rescue spokesman confirmed "we have a report that maybe there is a plane in the water."

The plane has not been located and it is unknown if there is any survivors.
