Drill: Airport in lockdown after suspicious bag discovered
FREQUENT flyers can rest assured that should a potentially tragic emergency situation arise at Gold Coast Airport staff and emergency services are well equipped to save the day.
The airport successfully conducted an emergency training exercise late last month involving more than 130 people determined to defuse an explosive situation.
The exercise was based on a scenario developed by the Airport Emergency Committee and involved a suspicious bag discovered with a simulated explosion in Terminal 2.
Persons involved included police, Gold Coast Airport response staff, Airport Fire Service, Australian Federal Police, fire and ambulance crews from both NSW and Queensland, as well as airline personnel.
Gold Coast Airport wrote on its website that "emergency exercises enable agencies to practice annually their response, command, coordination and control functions through a range of scenarios".
The exercise was held on August 21 and the airport said there was no disruption to passengers or scheduled services.
