Airport reports drop in passengers
GOLD Coast Airport experienced a slight drop in passengers during the month of July, according to a new report.
The Coolangatta-based airport recorded 445,337 passengers, a decrease of 7.2% over July last year.
Of this 380,211 were domestic passengers and more than 65,000 were international travellers.
Queensland Airports Limited managing director Dennis Chant said the decrease was the result of broader economic factors and the grounding of Tiger Airways.
“We have a period of lower consumer confidence which is having an impact particularly at Gold Coast Airport,” Mr Chant said.
“We have seen a reduction in capacity particular to leisure ports and there are also fewer discounted fares in the market that are so important to sustain high growth in these leisure destinations.
“We will to continue to work vigorously on cooperative marketing activity with our airline partners and the tourism industry, both domestically and in international markets to promote the Gold Coast as a destination. “
Domestic passengers decreased by 8.6% while international passenger numbers increased by 1.7%.
