Airport strike to cause delays

UPDATE: 4.10pm

There have been no reports of any delays at the Gold Coast airport and no significant delays have been reported at any of Australia’s seven other international airports.

Long queues were reported at Melbourne airport, but there have been no flight delays as a result.

INITIAL REPORT:

PASSENGERS at international airports can expect delays today with an expected 5000 Australian Border Force workers on strike until midnight.

International passengers travelling through Australia’s eight international airports - including the Gold Coast - have been advised to arrive earlier than usual for flights, with only minimal customs and immigration staff on duty.

A Gold Coast Airport spokesperson said passengers need to be prepared for possible delays.

“A 24 hour stoppage commenced in the early hours of this morning and we’re advising passengers to arrive earlier than normal for any potential delays that may occur,” the spokesperson said.

The protected industrial action will also delay the processing of arriving passengers and screening baggage and cargo, including bans on releasing goods or cargo after assessment.

The strike is part of a long-running pay dispute with the federal government, in relation to claims workers face cuts to pay and conditions.
