GYMPIE detectives are investigating the alleged assault of a Gympie State High School student.

Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Branch, Acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Bull, said it could not be confirmed if the girl was burnt with acid or if it was some other substance.

A Department of Community Safety spokesman said an ambulance was called to the school about 12.40pm and a girl, 17, was taken to Gympie Hospital.

Scenes of Crime officers onsite focused their investigations to near the school’s basketball courts and surrounding fence.
