Alleygators continue win streak
THE Palm Beach Currumbin Alleygators are hot, and not just because they now hold the Hot Tomato Cup.
The Alleygators' 21-13 victory at Currumbin over Surfers Paradise was their seventh win in a row, and lifted them to second position on the Rugby Gold Coast premiership ladder.
It was a tough encounter from the kick-off on Saturday with the smaller 'Gators forwards dominating the bigger Surfers pack through supreme fitness and enthusiasm, allowing for some expansive Alleygators attack out wide.
Strong performances from young PBC forwards Alex Behns and Dillon Cooper and robust defence across the park paved the way for the 'Gators win.
Alleygators coach Ryan Roberts was extremely happy with his players' efforts.
“It's always a physical game against Surfers and Saturday's game didn't disappoint,” Roberts said.
“We'd targeted the last two weeks (against competition leaders Gold Coast Eagles and Surfers) as a good measuring stick, and the boys have stepped up and beaten two of the competition's favourite teams.”
Eagles bounced back from their loss to Alleygators to beat Colleges 36-24 in an exciting try-fest at James Overell Park.
In the other first-grade match, Helensvale beat Bond Pirates 15-10.
There was a full round of rugby played at the weekend with the weather holding off across the Gold Coast.
The seniors kicked off with a fourth-grade double header played at Helensvale RUC on Friday night.
The Hinterland Celtics defeated Coomera Crushers 10-0, and the Helensvale Hogs downed Beaudesert 3-0 in a tough encounter.
In this weekend's action, Palm Beach will travel to Helensvale to tackle the Hogs who are always hard to beat at home.
The Hogs head into the match on a high after downing the more-favoured Bond Pirates, but the Alleygators will be a true test of their quality.
The Hogs don't lack motivation though and a win will elevate them to fourth spot.
In other first-grade matches, Surfers take on Nerang at home, while Bond Pirates host the Eagles.
