Alpacas take centre stage at Murwillumbah Showgrounds

THE finest alpacas will strut their fluffy stuff at the inaugural Murwillumbah Alpaca Show at the Murwillumbah Showgrounds on June 28.

The first alpaca came to Tweed 20 years ago and now there are several alpaca studs in the region, which will compete for the prestigious title of Supreme Champion.

Show convenor Rosemary Eva of Palmvale expects at least 100-130 alpacas in the judging arena, but of course none will be as "handsome" as her alpaca - Longueville Madiba.

He won the Supreme Black Alpaca at the annual Grafton Show this year.

"He is a gorgeous handsome boy. We had stiff competition, but he was judged the best of the show for his quality of the fleece, bone structure, stance and temperament," Ms Eva said.

The organisers want to educate the community about the alpaca industry through the event.

"The prime use of alpaca is a fleece. There are several outlets for alpaca but with the regrettable closure of mills in Australia the alpaca fleece is now sent overseas for processing," Ms Eva said.

Entry is free.
