Alstonville secures first cricket finals berth in a decade

ALSTONVILLE will play in the Far North Coast LJ Hooker League finals for the first time in more than a decade.

The Red Soilers claimed first innings points against Pottsville when the final round of the competition concluded at Hill Park, Wollongbar on Saturday.

They finish the season third and will take on Ballina Bears at Fripp Oval on Saturday.

Alstonville were unlucky not to make the finals last year and haven't played a part in the semi-finals since the 2002-2003 season.

They won their first and only LJ Hooker League premiership against Tintenbar-East Ballina in 2001-2002. The year before that they lost to the 'Bar in the final.

Elsewhere, defending premiers Cudgen finished on top of the ladder after a draw against Ballina Bears at Fripp Oval, Ballina.

Bears set a massive total of 279 and were hopeful of leapfrogging Cudgen into first.

Middle-order batsman Craig Wilson top scored on 90 while Jamie Wilson was unbeaten on 83 as Cudgen batted out the full 87 overs.

Bears all-rounder Sam Adams continued his strong season, taking five of the six wickets as Cudgen finished at 6-257.

In the other game, Casino and Marist Brothers failed to get the required outright win with both teams chasing maximum points to sneak into fourth.

Marist Brothers declared at 6-155 in reply to Casino's first innings total of 4-286(dec).

Sam Irvine top scored with 40 before Casino declared at 6-94. However, contributions from Brothers opener Nick De Giusti (73), Luke Cleaver (58) and Toby Collings (47) saw them finish 6-228 at stumps.
