Ambitious vision for the future of Lismore's airport

LISMORE Regional Airport is finally getting a much needed makeover and new upgraded runway lighting signals the start of a major transport and retail hub development in the under utilised section just outside Three Chain Road.

While easy to dismiss a row of landing lights as insignificant, in reality it is part of an ambitious vision to make the Lismore Aviation Centre into the biggest regional aviation hub between Brisbane and Sydney.

The $1.87 million upgrade of the entire airport, plus major retail infrastructure on the surrounding grounds, gives the Northern Rivers an exciting opportunity to have two major transport hubs within an hour of each other, both focusing on different clientele and services.

Lismore City Council Commercial Services Co-ordinator Kevin Trustum said the upgrade involves the installation of over 9000 metres of cabling and 120 new LED runway and taxiway lights.

"The runway lighting project is being undertaken by a Queensland company with assistance from 11 local contractors including surveyors, electricians, cable locators, concreters and local suppliers," Mr Trustum said.

"The upgrade has been allocated $1.57 million in funding through the NSW Government's Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

"These works are part of a broader plan to improve passenger services at Lismore Regional Airport and build the Lismore Aviation Centre into a first-class regional facility."
