Anger over police asbestos threat

EVERY police station in the Tweed Byron Local Area Command contains deadly asbestos or lead paint with officers at risk every day, the NSW Police Association says.

The association has threatened the NSW Police Force with legal action after it was leaked a police report dating back to 2008 that revealed 460 police buildings across the state were potential hazards.

NSW Police Association northern region executive Tony King said the association was furious the NSW Police Force had known about the issue for years but failed to act until now.

“That's just not good enough. Why have they covered it up for so long?” Mr King said.

“The NSW Police Force has clearly concealed serious risks from its employees.

“There is no safe level of exposure to asbestos.”

He said the association would take industrial action unless the issue was resolved.

“The NSW Government must fund upgrades to all police buildings, the minister must find out how the ‘cover up' occurred and an official apology must be made to all members of the force and their families or we'll take industrial action,” Mr King said.

The NSW Police Force Properties group admitted the issue should have been disclosed earlier and said a working party had been established to identify, prioritise and remediate high risk sites.

“Certainly there should have been advice to staff at the time, we recognise that, but we have since been pro-active in addressing the issue, notifying staff and getting the work done,” Superintendent Darryl Tuck said.

Local Area Commander Superintendent Stuart Wilkins said action was yet to be taken in the Tweed Byron command.

Both the NSW Police Force and NSW Police Association refused to release the complete report to The Daily News.
