Anglican priest is the new Archbishop of Sydney

CONSERVATIVE Anglican priest Glenn Davies is set to take over as the new Archbishop of Sydney.

More than 800 church representatives from around Sydney voted for their new leader late Tuesday.

Canon Rick Smith, 49, was also a contender but Fairfax reported 62-year-old Dr Davies was the "overwhelming winner".

Dr Davies will replace outgoing Archbishop Peter Jensen - who served in the role for 12 years - at the official inauguration on August 23.
