Animal crusader rallies for zoo
THERE is no doubt cuddles from elephants and being playfully splashed by a green sea turtle is the animal kingdom's way of saying thank-you to Tegan Lather.
The 13-year-old has been on the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital fundraising bandwagon for a couple of years and this year will host a Family Fun Day Car Rally on May 27.
The event starts at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and includes pit-stops at Big Kart Track, Maleny Dairies, Sunshine Castle and Aussie World.
Last year Tegan raised $18,500 for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
This year she hopes to double that amount.
Tegan said animals were her passion and she would do everything in her power to raise money to provide much-needed equipment, medicine and lifesaving treatments for them.
"Dad is an animal nut and that is how I got into animals," she said.
Tegan's career aspiration does not follow a typical path.
She isn't concerned with being a carer or vet, but to be an architect who designs animal enclosures.
"There are a lot of zoos which don't have good enclosures, but Australia Zoo definitely has great ones," Tegan said.
"I want to help other zoos make changes to their enclosures to make them better for the animals and for visitors to view the animals."

The cost of entry will be $125 per car. All profits will be donated to Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors.
