Anzac spirit shines strong
THE Anzac spirit proved strong on Monday with thousands turning out to commemorate our diggers in ceremonies across the shire.
A cold, damp crowd gathered for the service at the Jack Evans Boat Harbour memorial in Tweed Heads.
Tweed MP Geoff Provest was among those who spoke at the service, paying tribute to returned service men and women, as well as those still serving.
“We should never forget what our Anzacs fought for or how lucky we are to be living in Australia, and living in the Tweed,” Mr Provest said.
Carlee Parker, from Banora Point, attended the service with her two young children Cohen and Sofia, who wore the medals of their great-grandfather and great uncle, who served on the HMAS Perth.
“The dawn service is our thing,” Ms Parker said.
“They’ve never missed one.”
At Murwillumbah an estimated crowd of 1000 lined the streets to watch veterans march to the Murwillumbah Centotaph.
A couple of hundred people turned out for the Pottsville ceremony at Anzac Park Cenotaph.
