THEY may not be in the grand final of the Gold Coast and District Rugby Union competition but today's games are still vitally important to the Tweed-Coolangatta Barbarians club. The Baa Baas are hosting the finals at their Goodwin Park, Coolangatta ground from 9am today. "It is our major fundraiser for the year," club president Matt Sands said. "We are hoping for a big crowd. It is a big honour for us to host the event." He said it was a shame the Baa Baas would not be represented on the field. However he said they had enjoyed a good season - something to improve on next year. The club's five-eight James Re- wi-Wetini was named Gold Coast player of the year last week, while the first grade finished just out of the four after causing major headaches for all of the top teams and the third grade made the first week of the final series. The first grade final will start at 3pm and will feature minor premiers Bond, who are strong all over the ground, up against Surfers Paradise who have arguably the best forward pack in the competition. It is the first time in several years that Palm Beach, who were knocked out two weeks ago, have not been represented in the main game. However the club will still be out in force, playing Bond-Pirates in the third grade final at 9am and Surfers Paradise Dolphins in the second grade at 1pm. The Colts match between Bond and Griffith University CollegesKnights at 11am.
