Gil proves you?re never too old to party

ONE of Australia's oldest men, World War I veteran Gil Bennion of Tweed Heads, celebrated his 106th birthday yesterday.

Mr Bennion is just a few months younger than the person believed to be the country's oldest Australian male, 106-year-old Perth resident Peter Casserly, also a World War I veteran. Mr Bennion's daughter and carer Shirley along with friends from the Palm Beach Happy Group organised a party for the occasion at the Palm Beach Share and Care Centre, presenting him with a special 106 shirt and telling him they had been offered a discount on a 107 shirt.

Mr Bennion heartily thanked them adding: "You are too kind."

Australia's oldest woman, reputed to be Sydney's Myra Nicholson, is due to celebrate her 110th birthday in December.
