Give kids a fair shot
By HUGH KEARNEY
AUSTRALIAN golfing legend Jack Newton, in Murwillumbah yesterday overseeing the latest crop of promising juniors, lashed out against some senior Sydney clubs for not giving them a fair go. The top 320 junior golfers from around NSW have for the past four days been vying for the top prize in the Jack Newton Juniors State Age Championships, with competition split between Mullumbimby and Murwillumbah courses. With the top contenders at Murwillumbah for the final day, Newton took his traditional role of calling up players on the first tee, greeting each and wishing them good luck. Newton said the general playing ability of juniors continued to rise. "They have better coaching and better equipment these days," he said. "Some of these kids know more about their swing at 15 than I did at 25." But Newton, who has dedicated his career to junior development through camps, clinics, scholarships and quality tournaments, said the most frustrating thing was getting juniors into some of the 'old school' golf clubs.
