Hip hip, more hay, a hug and cake today

HORSES everywhere today celebrate their birthdays.

From the most expensive stud stallion to the humblest pony, they all share August 1 as their official birthday.

The reason is simple ? it makes it easier keeping track of racehorses' ages. No cheating.

At Tweed Heads pony club it was a special day for the horses and their owners. While age is not such a big issue for pony club horses, some owners were admitting to providing a bit of extra hay and a special hug.

Sandy Deehan, whose children ride horses, said pony club horses had it pretty good.

"Every day is a birthday for them, if you ask me," she said.

"If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to come back as a pony club horse. They get spoilt rotten."
