Hornets looking to go forward

STAND in Cudgen prop Damian Bryant moves into a heated front row battle tomorrow against the in form Mullumbimby Giants at Ned Byrne Field.

Byrant will be switched to the front row after last week's season ending injury to Matty Chadburn, sidelined for the rest of the year with a broken arm.

Chadburn has been the Hornets' key go forward man this season.

The Giants are on a roll, having not been beaten since round four in this year's Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League competition. Their last game was a hard-fought win over then competition leaders Murwillumbah, and they had the bye last week.

Cudgen coach Jamie Mathiou said tomorrow's forward battle was going to be crucial.

"Mullumbimby have been going sensational, and we are going to have to be on our game," Mathiou said.

"They are strong all over the park, but we are going to have to be very good in our forwards."

This is the A grade side's last home game of the regular season, and Mathiou wants his team to sign off in style.

"We have probably struggled a bit against the better teams in the competition at home," Mathiou said.

"It should be a cracker."

Meanwhile at Dave Burns Field, South Tweed welcomes back representative second-rower Michael Kelly, who has missed six weeks with a broken thumb.

The Koalas are looking to get back to winning ways against lowly Byron Bay.

Coming off a tough month in which the club has failed to register a win, coach Brock Mathers has called on his players to switch on from the start.

"We have got to do all of the hard stuff in the first 20-30 minutes," Mathers said.

"Hopefully then we can pull away from them. We just want to get back to winning ways."
