It?s Michael against best in the world

FOURTH-year apprentice panelbeater Michael Knight is off to Finland to pit his skills against some of the world's best smash repairers.

Michael, who attends TAFE courses in Autobody Repair as part of his apprenticeship with Chinderah Smash Repairs, came top of his trade in an Australiawide skills test.

As national champion he won the right to join an Australian team of 21 TAFE students from trades as diverse as bricklaying and beauty care who will compete in an international Worldskills competition in the Finnish capital Helsinki in May.

Michael, 21, of Murwillumbah, has been honing his skills, including welding and fitting car panels in preparation for the race against the clock with apprentices from 17 countries.

"It has to be as quick as we can do it without making any mistakes. Marks are deducted for mistakes," he said yesterday.

NSW TAFE students dominate the Australian team, making up 14 of the 25 national champions.

To win the top Australian spots they competed against 600 of their peers from around the country.
