Junior surfers cut loose at Burleigh

TWEED'S junior surfers turned on the style at the South Coast Foam Junior Surf Slam at Burleigh Heads on the weekend.

Up and coming surfers from Northern NSW to Noosa competed in the South Coast Foam Junior Surf Slam, with grommets from eight to 15 years of age surfing in five divisions.

The competition was held in half metre waves, just the right conditions for the young ones to show their stuff and that is exactly what they did, ripping up the tiny beach breaks.

Bilinga surfer Mitch Duggan dominated the under-14 final, scoring nine-point rides from the judges.

Miami surfer Tyson Edwards placing second.

Likewise, in the under-16 boys' division Kingscliff surfer Keiren Lloyd dominated the final, with Sam Turner taking second.

Turner also picked up a South Coast Foam surfboard blank for the highest scoring wave of the event, a 9.67 ride in his first heat.

In the girls' under-16 division, 13-year-old Coolangatta surfer Grace Bullen was too strong, winning ahead of Currumbin's Amy Hubbard.

The trip north was worthwhile for Byron Bay surfer Sol Bailey who won the under-12 boys' division, with third generation Coolangatta surfer Noa Deane second.

In the battle of the mini-mes in the under-10s division, Mermaid Beach grommet Calvin Pirie won from Snapper Rocks' Jake Morrison. The South Coast Foam Junior Surf Slam is a surfing event designed for young up and coming surfers to have a go in their first contest. Surfers who have made the team for the state titles are unable to compete.

The event was a huge success, and will have an assured future with South Coast Foam and Fibreglass announcing a continuing sponsorship of the event.
