KOALAS ran in a double in the final inning to score a thrilling 7-5 victory over Sharks in their Tweed District Softball showdown at Piggabeen on Saturday.

With the match locked up at 5-5 heading into the final inning, it was the Koalas who held their nerve with centrefielder Ziggy Billings playing a starring role in the win.

The victory completed a winning double for Koalas after they had earlier trounced Pottsville 10-0.

In the women's competition, pitcher Amanda Searle produced a solid effort on the mound to guide Koalas to a comprehensive 13-4 win over Warriors.

In the other match, Murwillumbah bounced back from last week's 22-point shellacking at the hands of Cherokees to go down 12-6 to Arkedas.

n?Boston has taken the early lead in baseball's world series, edging out St Louis 11-9 in the opening game of the best-of-seven series.

Mark Bellhorn hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to deliver the winning runs for a club that has not won a World Series baseball title since 1918.

The Cardinals, seeking their 10th series title and first crown since 1982, will try to level the major league Baseball series in game two at Boston today.
