Local designer is in the swim

BURLEIGH Heads designer Gillian Marriage has scooped two awards at the prestigious 2004 Australian Fashion Design Awards.

A designer for more then 25 years, she took out awards in the kids' and swimwear sections.

Ms Marriage said she had won the award for swimwear in 2000 and 2001, but had missed out the previous two years.

"I wanted to do something different and more risque that would stand out," she said.

"While my designs may look simple they are in fact quite complicated."

Ms Marriage said that although the awards were unexpected they would likely raise her profile and generate Australia-wide interest, as well as from overseas.

She said she felt fortunate to take out the awards in what were arguably two of the most competitive sections of fashion design.

"Kids wear is a very wide-open section," Ms Marriage said.

"It can range from party wear to street wear, not specifically swimwear.

"Swimwear has been dominated for a long time by surf swimwear, but it is increasingly becoming more individualistic and more creative."

Ms Marriage has been designing under the label Riot Swimwear for the past four years.

She supplies shops throughout Queensland and is planning on going national next year.

"While I went for something more 'out there' for the fashion awards, my standard collection is a lot more wearable," Ms Marriage said.
