Mur?bah girls to give shield a shake

MURWILLUMBAH netball coach Beth O'Connor would love to see her under-13 side become the association's first in that age group to win an Origin Shield.

O'Connor knows it's a tough ask with representative teams from as far away as the Sunshine Coast and Grafton taking part in the tournament being held at Murwillumbah.

Irrespective of the result, the tournament is a great opportunity for her players to test themselves against some of the best young net- ballers in Queensland and NSW on their home court.

More than 80 teams, featuring some 600 players, will take part in this Sunday's Origin Shield, which is the official launch of Netball Queensland's 2005 representative season.

Numbers are well up on last year when only 54 teams participated.

The Origin Shield is a state versus state clash staged annually for teams in age group divisions from 12 to 17 years.

Murwillumbah has entered five teams this year.

"It's going to be a tough competition, that's for sure," said O'Connor.
