New course record takes out M?bah Pro-Am
QUEENSLAND-based professional golfer Jason Ashcroft shot a new course record to win the 11th annual Murwillumbah Golf Club Pro-Am.
Ashcroft shot a 67 to go four under par and pick up the $1200 winner's purse ? part of the $7000 in prizemoney on offer yesterday. (The Murwillumbah course has recently been lengthened by an extra 80 metres).
A quality field was assembled for the event, with 63 professionals and another 120 amateurs taking part.
Ashcroft, second in the Virginia Pro-Am in Brisbane late last month and one of the stars of this year's Sunshine Tour, finished one shot ahead of Victorian Jason Norris.
Norris's 68 was also under the previous course record of 69 and put him second just ahead of Queenslander Eddie Barr and South Australian Brendan Cant who both shared third with scores of 69. Queenslander Kenneth Glasson and Paul Williams, of South Australia, were next with rounds of 70.
Murwillumbah's Geoffry Rice won the men's 0-10 handicap event with 38 points ahead of Keith Dean on 37. The 11-plus division was taken out by K Girvin with 30 points, while Robert Kaehler was second with 39 points. Joy Smith took out the women's event with 34 points, with Julie Pezet finishing second on a count-back with 30 points.
The Murwillumbah event is one of the most popular on the circuit and always attracts a strong field.
