Melbourne Cup helicopter crash to be investigated by ATSB

THE crashing of a helicopter acting as a race-day taxi delivering punters to and from Flemington racecourse for the Derby Day races will now be forensically examined by Australia's transport investigators.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is now working to discover why the Bell helicopter went down at a Victorian oval at 6.30pm on Saturday.

The female pilot was the only one in the helicopter when it went down, sending the rotor blade 30m through the air and into a parked car.

The Age reports the pilot managed to drag herself from the wreckage with a grazed thumb her only injury.

Two ATSB investigators arrived on site on Sunday morning to comb through "perishable" evidence, before giving a brief round-up of events to media at 2pm Melbourne time.

A report on their early findings will likely be released within 30 days, while more comprehensive results may take up to 12 months to be made public.
