Australian jobless number sees slight fall in May

THE jobless rate fell one percentage point to 5.5% in May, figures released on Thursday showed.

In its monthly jobs figures, the Australian Bureau of Statistics found the unemployment rate was marginally better in May than April.

The figures showed the number of people employed rose 1100 to 11,663,300 in May, on the back of a rise in part-time employment.

However, the 6400 people who got part-time employment in May was offset by a fall in full-time work, down 5300 to 8,153,600.

The number of people unemployed also fell by 3600 to 682,900.

Seasonally adjusted, the total labour force participation rate fell 0.1 percentage points to 65.2% in May.
