Parko tipping Aussie revival

WORLD No.2 Joel Parkinson is confident an Australian can reclaim the World Junior Championship when the $45,000 Association of Surfing Professionals event takes to the water in Sydney next week.

The Australians were upstaged last year, beaten by Brazilian dynamo Adrianno De Souza who snuck under their guards to snatch the under-20 title.

But Parkinson has no doubts the Australian contingent, including Coolangatta duo Clint Kimmins and Luke Dorrington, will be better prepared this time around.

"The Aussies will come out firing," said Parkinson who won the world junior title in 1999 and 2001.

"Adriano is going to be pretty fierce, he will definitely be up there (but) I think this year the Aussies will overpower him."

The Australians will face a tough task with 48 of the world's best under-20 surfers, including Frenchman Jeremy Flores and Hawaiian Dustin Cuizon confirmed for the January 1-8 event.

Competition is scheduled to commence on January 1 with North Narrabeen the preferred venue.
