Police are investigating whether speed contributed to a fatal crash at Nerang.

An 86-year-old Nerang man died in hospital after a Ford utility collided with a Honda Jazz in Nerang, around 3.15pm (AEST) Wednesday.

The 86-year-old driver of the Honda, a Nerang resident, was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital in a stable condition with suspected chest and pelvis injuries.

But his condition deteriorated rapidly and he died around 5pm.

Police are investigating witness reports that two vehicles were allegedly seen speeding just before the crash.

The driver of the utility, a 22-year-old Gilston man, was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital with minor arm injuries.
