Punters staking on a big win

NSW punters are set to splurge almost $100 million on Melbourne Cup Day tomorrow.
Tweed punters will no doubt do their bit to contribute to the betting frenzy, likely to top the $91 million outlaid at TABs across NSW on Cup Day last year.
TAB outlets at the Twin Towns Services Club and the Kingscliff Hotel will be two of the most popular betting spots tomorrow.
Melbourne Cup Day is one of the busiest days of the year for Tweed clubs.
Twin Towns marketing manager Phil Villiers yesterday said a spectacular Cup Day luncheon kicks off at the Twin Towns Showroom from noon (DST). Throughout the club, there will be fashion parades and Cup-themed entertainment.
Seagulls spokeswoman Cindy Mulheron said the Jacana Room would be renamed the Phar Lap Bar and the "Bookie Brothers" street theatre team would give roving performances throughout the day.
Club Banora's Pandanus Lounge will also host a large Cup Day celebration from 11.30am (DST).
Tweed River Jockey Club's race course at Murwillumbah is anticipating more than 5000 people to attend its famous Cup Day meeting, a record turnout, with gates open from 9.30am (DST). Entry is $15.
The Cup Day race meeting at Murwillumbah includes fashions on the field and this year 35 large marquees have been set up for the pundits.
Free buses to the Murwillumbah races tomorrow can be booked through Radio 97 by phoning (07) 5524 4497.
