P?ville already on web

AUSTRALIAN geographic website names are not up for grabs until the end of this month but one Tweed name has already been snaffled.

Pottsville.com.au is already in use and has been for five years, according to Australia's internet regulator for Australia, auDA.

The Pottsville domain name is used as the website for Pottsville Beach First National Real Estate in Coronation Street, Pottsville.

A spokesman for the real estate agency said that in 2000 he applied for both pottsville.com.au and pottsvillebeach.com.au and was knocked back on the beach variation but given the Pottsville version.

But in 2003 the Geographical Names Board of NSW added Pottsville to its records as a name for the village and area and marked Pottsville Beach as a "variant" or unofficial name.

Both Pottsville Beach and Lower Cudgera are listed as the previous names of the area, in fact the public school in the town was named Cudgera Lower Public School until 1986.

So in the meantime both pottsville.com.au and pottsvillebeach.com.au have both been taken and used as website addresses and will not be available in the national ballot later in the month.

Pottsville names are not the only names not on the list - there are other "irregularities" including melbourne.com.au and sydney.com.au.
