Rally sponsor to open office in Mur'bah
CAR parts giant and car rally sponsor Repco plans to open a new office in Murwillumbah for the planned World Rally Championship to be held on the Tweed next year.
The company has also appointed a general manager for the event, Gary Upson from New Zealand, who intends to move to the Tweed Coast within weeks.
It says the new Repco rally office is expected to open in Murwillumbah in early November.
Mr Upson, the former general manager of Rally New Zealand, has been appointed as general manager of Australia's round of the FIA World Rally Championship which is due to be run in the Tweed and Kyogle shires from September 3 to September 6 next year.
A Repco spokesperson said Mr Upson, 41, was well known in World Championship circles, having managed the New Zealand event from 1998 until 2005.
During that time the event won the prestigious Rally of the Year Award.
Mr Upson is also a manager for Land Rover New Zealand.
"I am really excited at the prospect of helping to bring the spectacle and thrill of the WRC to the East Coast of Australia for the first time," Mr Upson said.
"Northern NSW and particularly the Tweed/Kyogle region is a fantastic area to truly showcase the beauty of Australia to the world via this event.
"I am looking forward to working with our sponsors Repco, Events NSW and the team of almost 2000 CAMS officials and staff who will make this a great motor sport event."
