THE foundations have been laid for the new Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club - a whopping 220 cubic metres of them.

Club president Patrick Raftery couldn't wipe the smile off his face, along with other club members, as they watched their years of hard work and planning taking shape.

"We're all happy as Larry to see it happening," Mr Raftery said.

"Club members have been waiting many years for this.

"The building has been designed to resemble a beach house, reasonably informal to suit the area.

"After all, we didn't want a big Taj Mahal on the beach."

Local builders Jeff and Jenny Johnson of Unique Homes Cabarita Beach was appointed to construct the clubhouse.

Mr Raftery said they hoped to have the building complete by mid-2006.

A community Christmas party will be held on December 10 from 2pm to 8pm (NSW) on the beach in front of the new slab to celebrate the start of the building.

There will be live bands, spit roasts, tug-owars, raffles and more.
