Smarty Pants a novel path into school life

WITH a name like Elvis, he does not mind dressing up at all.

Elvis Walsh, 5, fitted in very well at the "Smarty Pants Day" at St Joseph's Primary School, South Murwillumbah, when new kindergarten pupils were introduced to their Year 6 "buddies".

Each kindy child is paired with a Year Sixer for the year, to act as an older friend, guide and mentor in the playground and elsewhere around the school.

Elvis' buddy Blake Hawkins, 11, said his mum Leanne was pleased to hear about Elvis because she is "obsessed" with Elvis Presley.

The St Joseph's buddy program, co-ordinated by Year 6 teacher Marion Godfrey and kindergarten teacher Sharon Holmes, commences with the kindy kids dressing up for the day and reading their "Smarty Pants" books.

The books help introduce the youngsters to the alphabet.
