State supremacy on the line

CELEBRITIES, sporting heroes and sponsors will line up this Saturday for the annual Tweed Heads Dragon Boat Festival.

Pitting state against state, crews will compete for the AMP Border Challenge title while also raising much-needed funds for Kids in Need, a local charity that helps Tweed and Gold Coast children with serious medical conditions.

The charity helps fund specialist equipment such as wheelchairs and antenatal beds for kids with disabilities such as autism and spina bifida.

Kids in Need also helps families meet medical costs associated with specialist medical treatment. A great cause but a fierce race in which Queensland will attempt to reclaim the title lost to NSW last year.

Led by four-time Olympian Martin Marinov, the Queensland crew will include players from the Gold Coast Titans and ironman champion Zane Holmes.

The current champion NSW crew will be led by Olympic backstroker Josh Watson.

The festival runs from 8am to 4pm (DST) at Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Tweed Heads. The race will begin at midday (DST).
