Sucked in

Defending Roxy Pro champion Stephanie Gilmore had the last laugh in her showdown with her friend, world champion Chelsea Georgeson, in round three of the Roxy Pro at Duranbah Beach yesterday.

After copping some ribbing after narrowly losing the first heat to Georgeson, Gilmore made the most of the ordinary conditions to oust the current world champion. Asked what she said to her friend after beating her, Gilmore replied cheekily, "Sucked in," before breaking into her trademark smile.And to show there were no hard feelings, Georgeson tipped Gilmore as the one to beat. Gilmore from Kingscliff took the early initiative in the heat, posting 8.67 and 7.67 in her opening waves to put the pressure back on her friend, who is from Tweed Heads. Though Georgeson caught more waves, she was always chasing Gilmore's scores.

Her selection let her down and she couldn't find the waves to help lift her score. Gilmore ran out the heat winner 16.34 to 7.9 and in doing so posted the highest score of the round.
