Threat for families


A SENIOR union leader has urged Tweed families to be vigilant against rorting bosses and is encouraged by public support for unions challenging the Federal Government's industrial law changes.

Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association NSW branch secretary Gerard Dwyer told the Daily News that although the planned workplace changes appeared to be complex, there was a simple principle at stake.

This was the risk to all workers that they would be worse off under the new system.

Mr Dwyer said the Government planned to water down the 'no-disadvantage test' for workers facing employment under contracts and this could mean a lot of families would end up worse off.

"These changes will determine what sort of workplaces we will get for our kids," Mr Dwyer said.

He was speaking during a visit to the Tweed Heads Coles supermarket, where he presented an SDA community service scholarship to Ross Anderson of South Tweed.

SDA officials with Mr Dwyer said some NSW North Coast bosses were already trying to take advantage of the Federal Government's workplace reform agenda, although none had been identified on the Tweed.

However, at Coffs Harbour a bakery had tried to introduce new contracts for its staff with $51 a week pay cuts and at Byron Bay an independent supermarket was trying to trade off annual and sick leave and leave loadings in return for a pay rise amounting to $1 a week, the SDA officials said.

Mr Dwyer said union leaders had been encouraged by the level of community support for the union campaign against the Government's workplace changes.
