Tweed duo kicking into action for Q?land
TWO Tweed players have gained state selection following the Queensland Women's Soccer titles at Palm Beach over the long weekend.
Former Matildas and Queensland player Belinda Dawney is back in the side along with Tweed teammate Michelle Garnett. The pair are two of six Gold Coast players to make it into this year's Queensland team after they helped guide the side to third spot in the Queensland titles.
Brisbane Blue took out the event beating the Sunshine Coast 2-0 in the grand final. The Sunshine Coast put Gold Coast out of the finals beating them in a heart-stopping 3-2 semi, snatching a goal in the final seconds of the game after the Gold Coast had led 2-0 in the first half.
Tweed players Jade Bianchetti and Dawney, the Coast's main striking combination, scored the early goals for the home side. The Sunshine Coast was the only side to beat Gold Coast all weekend.
The team started their campaign on Saturday with a two-all draw with Brisbane red, with Dawney and Bianchetti scoring the goals. Next they demolished Far North Queensland, beating them 6-0, with Bianchetti and Tweed's Sally Knight among the goal-scorers. They defeated North Queensland 3-0 before the Sunshine Coast beat them 2-1 in the final pool game.
The region's two Masters teams finished out of the placings.
