Welcome to Schoolies Week, and stay safe

TODAY marks the official start of Schoolies Week on the Gold Coast, and love it or loathe it, it's a big moneyspinner for the Coast.

The Schoolies Week organisation team has taken out Queensland's top category in the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards for 2005.

The Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors Warren Pitt said Gold Coast Schoolies Week was recognised for its role in reducing violence and other crimes during the traditional end-of-year student celebrations.

The $7000 prize and Certificate of Merit was presented to representatives from the Gold Coast Schoolies Week team at an award ceremony in Brisbane last week.

However, local social workers are still concerned about protecting the safety of vulnerable young people at the event.
