Army reservists attempt beach challenge for Movember

CURRUMBIN army reservists Sam Weir and Ben Harris are literally throwing themselves into charity work.

The two, who are sporting moustaches for Movember are embarking on a 40-40 Beach Stomp.

This charity event aimed at raising money and awareness for Movember, highlights prostate cancer and depression in men.

Not content with the standard Movember practise of growing some upper lip fluff and requesting sponsorship money the two plan on marching 40 gruelling kilometres with 18kg of weight strapped to their backs in boot deep water along the Gold Coast's shoreline.

Whilst doing so they will be clad in their army fatigues and boots.

Both Mr Weir and Harris first heard rumours of such a challenge being used as a training tool for the toughest of the tough in the French Foreign Legion.

Army legend aside, there has been only one recorded attempt to carry out such a challenge which was performed in a flat water lake in the UK and the participant fell well short of his target.

They are confident of reaching their goal despite the unpredictable and ever-changing nature of the Gold Coast's open-water coastline.

The boys originally intended to undertake this as a personal challenge but soon realised it was a fantastic vehicle to do something for the greater good and raise much needed funds for charity.

Given the masculine nature of the challenge it seemed fitting that funds be donated to Movember, an organisation renowned for their contributions to male specific charities: Beyond Blue and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

They head out tomorrow (Saturday) at 8am.

The action will start at Miami Beach and gradually stomp north to the Southport Spit wall, slosh back south to Miami and then back as far north as the Q1 building in Surfers Paradise.
