Art mirrors culture

HIS art is a reflection of his culture and a testament to the teachings of his great great-grandfather.

Edward Williams uses a traditional indigenous Australian art style to portray his own view of his country and culture at Cape York.

His work goes on exhibition on March 22 at the Tweed Heads Presbyterian Church.

"I used to paint whatever came to my mind," he said.

"But it never felt quite right.

"I began to look inside myself and my origins for ideas and then it started to flow.

"It was all there and as I matured I began to see how I could draw on my own experiences and the teachings of my great great- grandfather to showcase my culture."

Mr Williams uses the colours of his land - vibrant reds that represent the soil and luminous blues of the sea.

"My paintings mainly represent the land and animals relevant to my people, my family and my life," he said.

"It all comes from my head.

"There is a wealth of knowledge and imagery thanks to my background."

Using carefully placed dots, his work is intricate yet dynamic.

"It wasn't easy to learn the style," he said.

A trip to England is on the cards for Mr Williams, as well as an exhibition in Canberra.

"It's all very exciting," he said.

The exhibition starts at 6.30pm for one night only at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Wharf and Florence streets, Tweed Heads.
