Arts alive and thriving in Kunghur
HAVE you heard of Kunghur?
It's right next to Mount Burrell and it has a thriving community of artists and musicians, including Fiona Ryan.
My Daily News came across Fiona during her recent garage sale.
With guitars, drums and even a mandolin for sale amongst the eclectic display, it was a unique event.
Fiona moved from Byron Bay for a tree change.
Her home is like something out of a Lord of the Rings movie, built just above a creek and waterfall.
"I fell in love with the house as soon as I saw it,' she said.
Her old VW Kombi sits in the backyard.
"There are many memories associated with that Kombi," she laughed.
Fiona and her partner Craig are musicians.
"I particularly love Irish music," she said.
"With a name like Ryan, I guess that makes sense."
Their band Sydney or the Bush plays at the Nimbin Markets and their CD launch is on October 7 at Sphinx Rock Cafe, Mount Burrell.
Like most rural settlements in the region, Kunghur was established when timber-getters harvesting the sub-tropical rainforests cleared the way for dairy and cattle farmers.
