Man charged over attempted armed bank robbery

UPDATE May 8, 8.50am:

A QUEENSLAND man has been charged over the attempted armed bank robbery, the same day someone tried to break into two banks in Tweed.

About 4pm Thursday, a 27-year-old man allegedly entered a bank on the Gold Coast Hwy at Surfers Paradise and approached a teller before providing his account number and requesting a withdrawal.

Police allege when he was advised there were insufficient funds in the account, the man showed the teller a message on his mobile phone, stating he would shoot the teller if the money was not handed over.

The teller activated a security device and the man left the bank empty-handed.

He is due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Friday morning.

Tweed-Byron Local Area Command crime manager Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen said there was so far no evidence to suggest the attempted robbery was linked to two attempted break and enters at Tweed banks.

Insp Cullen said he has been speaking to police in Surfers Paradise, but there was nothing concrete to suggest this was linked to the Tweed incidents.

He said police were still considering the Tweed incidents as linked.

"They were very similar circumstances there," Insp Cullen said.

"But we will be open minded about whether or not we treat them as linked."

He said no further banks had been targeted in the Tweed overnight.

Between 3.30 and 4.15am Thursday, someone attempted to break into the Bank of Queensland and BCU credit union at Tweed Heads South.

Someone also tried to break into an ATM in Tugun about the same time, Queensland police said.

Tweed-Byron Local Area Command Detective Sergeant Terry Frost said a financial institution on Blundall Blvd was broken into, while someone attempted to gain entry into one on nearby Greenway Dr.

He said nothing was stolen.

"At this stage we are treating them as linked," Det Sgt Frost said.

"We're liaising with Queensland Police and looking at what assistance they can give us."

He said Tweed police were made aware of the Tugun incident.

"The police here will be vigilant during the night," he said.

A Queensland Police spokesman declined to say whether any money was stolen in the Tugun incident.

The exteriors of both Tweed banks were seriously damaged in the incidents.

Anyone with information on the Tweed Heads South or Tugun incidents should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

UPDATE 10.37am:

A BANK, a credit union and at least one ATM have been targeted overnight.

Police have confirmed someone attempted to break into an ATM in Tugun on Wednesday night.

A Queensland Police spokesman would not say whether any money was stolen.

This was in addition to at least two attempted break-ins at a bank and credit union in Tweed Heads South.
