Aussie actress Wendy Hughes has died aged 61

AUSTRALIAN theatre and television actress Wendy Hughes, 61, has died.

News of her death was announced by actor Bryan Brown to the audience of Sydney Theatre Company's Travelling North on Saturday afternoon.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported theatregoers gave a standing ovation to honour the late actress.

She is understood to have lost a battle with cancer early on Saturday morning.

Ms Hughes most recently performed in Network Ten's drama State Coroner and was considered among one of Australia's most recognisable actresses.
