Aussies unlikely to auto-qualify for Olympic Sevens

AUSTRALIA'S chances of qualifying automatically for next year's Olympic Games look almost over after another poor showing at the Glasgow Sevens.

Geraint John's men sit 16 points behind fourth-placed England with just the final round of the World Series to come. With only the top four assured of qualification for Rio, the Aussies need a miracle.

If Australia does finish the season in its current position of fifth, it will play in the regional Oceania Rugby tournament in Auckland on November 14-15, with the winning nation securing qualification for Rio, the Australian Rugby Union said in a statement.

After going unbeaten on day one, including drawing 17-all with England, in the pool stage, Australia lost to the United States and South Africa on finals day.

The team was defeated in its Cup quarter-final by the USA 14-7 before succumbing to South Africa 21-12 in the Plate semi-final at a wet Scotstoun Stadium.

Fiji moved to the top of the World Series standings after beating New Zealand in the Cup final, while England defeated the US to finish third. South Africa saw off Scotland in the Plate Final to finish fifth.

The World Series heads to Twickenham next weekend as the season draws to a close. Australia has been drawn in Pool B alongside New Zealand, Wales and Japan.
