Aussies on collision course at Indian Wells
TENNIS: Aussies Sam Stosur and Ajla Tomljanovic are projected to clash in the second round of the rich BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells this week following the official draw.
The all-Queensland encounter in the Californian desert will take place if resurgent Tomljanovic downs German Julia Gorges in the opening phase.
Tomljanovic was impressive during a first-round upset of Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard in Acapulco last week at her first appearance following a long injury lay-off.
Stosur and Daria Gavrilova both have first-round byes, courtesy of high rankings and seedings.
Gavrilova will play either Belgian Yanina Wickmayer or German Laura Siegemund in the second round.
Serena Williams will face Olympic singles gold medallist Monica Puig or American Danielle Collins in her first appearance since claiming the Australian Open title in January.
The men's draw will take place on Wednesday.
World No.16 Nick Kyrgios leads the Australian charge, along with Bernard Tomic and Jordan Thompson.
Sam Groth and Alex de Minaur will contest qualifying.
Novak Djokovic will attempt to defend the men's title, while Victoria Azarenka will be absent after giving birth to her first child last year.
Based in California, Azarenka is back in training and hopes to be back for August's US Open.
