Australia Day: Govt delivers threat over 'political' events

RENEGADE councils that threaten to hijack Australia Day citizenship ceremonies with political correctness will be stripped of their power to hold the formalities by the Federal Government.

Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Alex Hawke will today write to all 547 councils across Australia to warn them that if they test the Government with "politically motivated public attacks on Australia Day", they will be punished.

A growing number of left-leaning councils want Australia Day citizenship ceremonies moved to another day to accommodate indigenous sensitivities.

January 26 marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Australia.
